Beaches Democratic Club Meeting
Neptune Beach Public Library
April 15, 2008

Vice-President Lynn Cattin called the meeting to order at 7:02 and led members in the salute to the flag.

Cattin introduced Scott Shine who gave background information about the extensive educational and professional qualifications of Jay McGovern, who is candidate for running as Representative to Congress for District 4 to replace Ander Crenshaw. McGovern gave his plans for solving three important issues: economy, safety, and restoring the respect for America. He answered questions about government problems at the local, state, and national levels.

Dave Smith gave an update on his campaign status and asked that anyone who has not done so sign his petitions. Avia Jones announced that Larry Jones is running for Florida State Representative from District 19.

Virginia Benoit introduced and welcomed new member Steve Blaszal and guests John Dean, Adam Franciscus, Brittany Franciscus, Jay McGovern, Austin Monroe, Stan Porter, Frederick Tripp, Gini Tripp, Ben Weaver and Katie Williams.

Cattin discussed the volunteer opportunities to phone bank at the DCDEC office and stated she would like to hear from those willing to make up a beaches phone bank team.

Virginia Benoit moved, Shirley King seconded the motion that the minutes of the March 18, 2008 be accepted, and the motion passed without objection. Shirley King gave a treasurer’s report of a $1943.33 balance at the end of March and a current balance of $1851.48 after memberships received and bills paid. A motion to accept the treasurer’s report passed unanimously.

Committee Reports:
• Hospitality: Ted Seman thanked all those who brought food for the covered dish dinner and announced raffle for stainless steel utility set and sale of t-shirts and bumper stickers.
• Fund Raising: Virginia Benoit announced a June 21 Rummage Sale, location to be announced.
• Membership: Diana Townsend awarded a bottle of wine to Frances Wiggins for the most new members recruited.
• Publicity: Lynn Cattin thanked those who picked up 150 pounds of trash in the A1A Clean-Up event.
• Truth Squad: Jeff Bertsch discussed articles by Teddy Dawson and Peyton Hopkins to be placed for publication.
• Candidate Support: Lynn Cattin reminded members that we still need committeemen and committeewomen for precincts and the necessary paperwork to be elected. Shirley King is available tonight to notarize application forms.

Old Business:

Gratitude was expressed to Billee Bussard for all her work on the newsletter and for taking over this month’s newsletter while Susan Collins is traveling.

Members were reminded to let Cattin know if they would like to receive the newsletter by e-mail, saving paper and expense for the BDC.

New Business:

Volunteers are needed for two-hour shifts, from 10 AN – 6 PM, for the May 17, 2008 “Dancing in the Street” festival in Atlantic Beach.

Deborah Courtney announced the June 28 DWIN Silent Auction at the Union Hall on Liberty Street and encouraged members to offer units of service as well as items. The last similar event raised $8,000.

Cattin announced a Candidate Forum and Fundraiser Barbeque at her home June 14, 2008, will give details at the next meeting and encouraged members to car pool due to limited parking space.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 PM.
